Day 14 — September 18

Imagine a ten-year-old boy on the day before Christmas, excited about tomorrow morning. He can’t wait to get his brand-new bicycle.

Christmas morning comes. He jumps out of bed and runs into the living room looking for his bike. He sees some great gifts, but his bicycle is nowhere to be found. Santa didn’t bring it this time.

He still had a good Christmas, but he was disappointed that he didn’t get his bicycle.

Yesterday for us was a bit like that boy’s Christmas—it was good, but at the same time, a little disappointing.

Yesterday morning we had a good breakfast at Jose’s Country Store and Cafe in Ellsworth. Gayle had biscuits and gravy, and I had French toast. Then we were off to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.

We arrived in Bar Harbor around 9:30 a.m. The town was already crowded with people and traffic. Parking was once again difficult to find, but we got lucky and found a spot just off Main Street near the shopping area.

We spent about two hours shopping. It was cool, with a breeze that chilled you in the shade but felt refreshing in the sunlight. A couple of stores that had been advertised as good shopping spots didn’t quite live up to the advertising—at least for us.

But we did find several stores that pulled us in with great window displays, and the shopping was awesome inside. We left those stores knowing we had done our part to help the local economy.

After shopping, we headed toward Acadia National Park with great anticipation of seeing some beautiful views.

This is where we could relate to that boy who had a good Christmas but was still disappointed that Santa didn’t bring the bicycle.

There were some nice drives through forested areas, but nothing that had us reaching for the camera.

We finally got some ocean views and found some nice photo spots. Perhaps we’ve been spoiled by the picturesque and awesome scenery we’ve seen out West. For us, the views at Acadia were nice—but they weren’t breathtaking.

All in all, though, we still had a good time.

On the way back to our room, we stopped for a late lunch at Mainely Meat BBQ. Gayle had a thick and juicy, freshly made hamburger, and I had a pulled pork sandwich.

The pulled pork was served on Texas toast, and their house BBQ sauce was terrific. I am a big fan and loyal customer of Sonny’s BBQ back home, but I must confess: this pulled pork BBQ sandwich, with their house sauce, was better than Sonny’s.

There. I said it.

I also confessed it to the waitress.
