Yesterday was a milestone in our lives.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., Gayle and I crossed a short bridge spanning the Connecticut River and entered Vermont. At that moment, we completed our goal of visiting all 48 of the contiguous United States.

Mission accomplished!

However, Vermont and Mother Nature didn’t seem to care much about our personal triumph. Why? Because there was no sign welcoming us to Vermont, and the weather turned wet and foggy.

We were excited knowing we had just entered our 48th state. Incredibly, there wasn’t a “Welcome to Vermont” sign anywhere in sight. Really? There went the photo op I wanted to celebrate our achievement.

Because of the rain and fog that settled in, Vermont may have kept its mountains hidden from us, but it didn’t hide everything.

Ironically, as we were leaving Vermont and entering New York, we finally saw what we had been looking for—a “Welcome to Vermont” sign. Of course, we stopped and took pictures.

Mission accomplished!

Yesterday wasn’t a total wash for sightseeing. Before the rain and fog moved in, we saw two covered bridges and drove through one of them. We also visited Cathedral Ledge State Park, Lower Falls, and Rocky Gorge.

Then the rain settled in and took away the picturesque views of the White Mountains we had hoped to see as we drove through the area.

All in all, though, it was still a very good day because Gayle and I completed a goal we started a little over 39 months ago. Along the way, we traveled more than 24,000 miles, spent a little over twelve weeks living out of a suitcase, and sampled the skills of an unknown number of chefs across America.

Forty-eight states. Thousands of miles. Countless memories.

What an incredible journey! And it’s not over!
